Special Lipid extraction plant
This industrial CO2 extraction plant installed in New Zealand is used for a variety of products with a focus on highly valuable lipids from the local sea. For example, it produces Green lip mussel extract rich in Omega-3-fatty acids and consists of 91 different fatty acids including EPA, DHA but also the rare OTA and ETA with different positive effects:
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid): Known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid): Essential for brain health and development.
OTA (Octadecatetraenoic Acid). Like the other omega-3 fatty acids, OTA contributes to the anti-inflammatory properties
ETA (Eicosatetraenoic Acid): Special from green-lip mussels and also has anti-inflammatory benefits
This plant is equipped with a co-solvent extraction system for injection of ethanol into the supercritical CO2 stream to modify its polarity and dissolve components that would otherwise not be soluble. Due to this injection system, the whole equipment is ATEX protected to make it safe. Also other maritime products with similar substances like Krill can be extracted with this special plant. The equipment was originally designed for hops extraction but its high quality and flexibility was found to be even more valuable in other areas, which was also the reason for expanding it with a fourth extractor to increase the production capacity.
